The Adjustable Microtonal Acoustic Guitar CA-5 brings the same adjustable-fret mechanism as our flagship CK-5 to a steel-string acoustic platform. If you compose or perform across multiple tuning systems and prefer the projection, attack, and brightness of a steel-string over a classical nylon-string, this is the instrument built for you.

Quick Recommendation — Buy the CA-5 if you play folk, world fusion, or contemporary acoustic styles and need adjustable microtonal frets. If you play classical or fingerstyle nylon-string, the CK-5 ($2,999) is the better-suited sibling. For single-tuning steel-string microtonal, no fixed-fret model exists in our lineup — the CA-5 is the entry point.

Steel-string vs nylon-string for microtonal music

Most microtonal classical music traditions (Turkish makam, Arabic maqam) developed around nylon-string and oud-family tonal aesthetics — round, warm, vocal. But contemporary microtonal composition increasingly draws on folk and world-fusion idioms where steel-string articulation matters: chord-melody arrangements, percussive techniques, capo'd modal explorations. The CA-5 is the right instrument when you're working in those styles AND need the adjustable-fret flexibility.

Best for

  • Composers in folk, world-fusion, or contemporary acoustic styles working across tuning systems
  • Singer-songwriters who want microtonal color in chord-based arrangements
  • Fingerstyle players who already own a standard steel-string and want the microtonal version
  • Recording artists needing one instrument that adapts to multiple project tunings
  • Players coming from Western acoustic backgrounds entering microtonal territory

FAQ

Can I switch between steel and nylon strings on the CA-5?

No — the CA-5 is built around steel string tension (truss rod, bracing, neck angle). The CK-5 is the nylon-string version with identical fret adjustability.

Does the adjustable fret system work the same as the CK-5?

Identical. Same precision-machined slots, same friction-fit retention, same included tools and 14-position tuning template.

Is the steel-string version better for amplification?

It depends on the pickup. Steel-string acoustics pair well with magnetic pickups; nylon-string instruments require piezo systems. The CA-5 ships without electronics — contact us for compatible aftermarket recommendations.

Will the steel string tension shift the adjustable frets?

No. The friction-fit fret slots hold under standard playing tension, including the higher tension of steel strings.

What strings do you recommend?

Light-gauge (.012 to .053) phosphor bronze for warmth, or .011 lights for easier microtonal bends. The included starter set is medium-light phosphor bronze.
